How to Choose the Right Window Treatment

Transforming the look and feel of your home or office space can be as simple as choosing the right window covering, but the selection process may seem like a daunting task. There are several aspects to consider before deciding on a custom window treatment. Consider the following before choosing a window covering for your residence or business.

Is privacy a primary feature you’re looking for in custom window treatments? Bedrooms, bathrooms, and private offices benefit from window coverings with added privacy. Consider the core function of a room and how much privacy the space requires before choosing blinds or shades. Privacy can be achieved with any type of window covering, but some materials, including opaque fabrics, will provide a more discrete effect.

Insulation & Energy-Efficiency

The right window treatments have the potential to drastically improve your home’s insulation and significantly decrease your electric costs. Almost a quarter of a home’s heating and cooling costs can be attributed to lost energy through windows. The more layers a window treatment has, the more energy-efficient a space will be.

Lighting & Visibility

When selecting a custom window covering, it’s important to consider how much light you prefer to let into a room as well as what type of visibility you’d like through the windows. Some window treatments have light-filtering features that are perfect for kitchens, living rooms, and dining rooms where you may prefer significantly more light than private spaces. Conversely, blackout window treatments can block out virtually all of the light that enters a room, which is a great option for bedrooms or TV rooms. Shades and blinds offer adjustable lighting, as they can be raised or tilted depending on how much light you want to let in at any given time.

Thanks to technological advancements over the past few years, motorized window treatments have become a more affordable and accessible option. Motorized blinds and shades can be synced with one another and controlled through an app. Window coverings can also be programed to open or close automatically at certain times each day. This allows you to control the heat and lighting in your home with ease and efficiency.

Horizontal or Vertical Blinds

Blinds can be made from horizontal or vertical slats of wood, aluminum, vinyl, or composite materials. They can be custom-made in a variety of lengths and widths and offer adjustable options in regards to lighting. Blinds can be closed to shut out light, opened completely to let light in, or partially opened for an in between light filtering option.

Semi-Sheer Window Treatments

Semi-sheer window treatments are a good choice for family rooms, kitchens, and living rooms since these spaces don’t typically require very much privacy. However, depending on the number and size of windows in the space, the room may benefit from natural lighting. Semi-sheer fabric window treatments provide soft lighting options as well as privacy when they are completely lowered.

Shades are a window treatment option similar to blinds. Both types of window coverings are adjustable depending on your privacy wants and block outside light. However, instead of slats, shades are manufactured from continuous cotton, linen, or polyester fabric that rolls up with a thin pulley rope and are typically used to filter and soften light, instead of completely block it. Additionally, shades are usually less expensive than blinds.

“The carpet looks lovely and I am very satisfied with the service. I do especially want to express my appreciation to Jeff Dyrland for the excellent job he did in my home. He was superb in his skill and conscientiousness. It was amazing to watch him handle the huge, heavy carpet all by himself. It was truly an impressive experience.  He also maintained a cheerful, friendly attitude throughout the long, arduous day! Thank you also for your efficient measuring of the carpet!”
C. Sjogren

“What a relief to have a friend of the firm to help with an issue about which I know nothing whatsoever. Thank you for taking the time to personally handle our order and setting us up with an installer in Bend. Your help is much appreciated!” Lara Stahancyk, Kent, Johnson & Hook P.C.

“I wanted to thank you and your guys for the job you did replacing my parents’ carpet.  According to my dad, it went off like clockwork, my parents really like the carpet and my dad said your guys did a great job and he enjoyed working with them. Thanks a bunch for the great service. I owe you one. ”
Dan H.

“Thank you for the great service at every point of this relatively small project. We will recommend your services.”
The Pradelts

“We would like to thank you for the personal attention and courtesy extended to us. You allowed us the latitude to make those time consuming decisions that are always needed in selecting carpets for a home. We are extremely pleased with the end results. We would be remiss if we did not mention the skills of the carpet installer, Jeff Dyrland. He is a conscientious craftsman who completed the job in an extremely skillful and professional manner. If he is representative of the employees you hire, you certainly are doing it right.”
Bill and Jill L.

“We finally have the bedroom and bathroom finished and here are some pictures of the finished product. Thanks for all your patience and help with our project. I’ve been referring lots of people to you!”
Franki K.

“Thank you so much.  Dot was very pleased with the installation and your installer.  She called and raved last night!”
Scott C.

“We are now settled or almost settled, into our new home here in Washington. We often get to Portland on weekend trips and that’s how we found your business and your helpful staff. We had heard about the Amtico products and you had that line of flooring with samples to view. We ended up with the slate look in the mudroom and hallway, a cherry wood floor in the TV room and a tile look in a guest bath. We’re very pleased with all of them. Thanks for all the help from your end.”
Lenore and Don L.

“Just a note to tell you I’m pleased beyond description with the work your guy did for me. He was fast, competent and left not a thing to show repair work had been done. I will recommend Floor Factors with delight.”
E.  Shank

“I am still moving back into the studio and it’s much nicer on my body than moving out was. It looks beautiful and feels so good, especially compared to the concrete. Please also include the exact name of the product. I already have one person I want to refer it to. Thanks. It’s been a pleasure working with you guys.”
J. Edwards

“I just wanted to let you know I was by to say hi a couple of days ago.  You were not available so I talked to Rick Morehouse because I am getting a lot questions about the newest engineered hardwood flooring from my clients. Anyway, Rick was very knowledgeable and professional so I wanted to let you know how refreshing it is to have a resource like Rick instead of going to the big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes.  I will not hesitate to send business to Floor Factors anytime.”
Mark P.

“Thank you so much for all your help, your enthusiasm and attention to all my questions. Please extend my thanks to your installers. They did and outstanding job! They were on time, professional and helpful – they exceeded my expectations. This was not the easiest job in the world due to the small space and the carpet pattern. The installers had to move all the heavy furniture. Your installer’s experience and expertise were so valuable in making everything come together. You are all outstanding representatives of your company.”
Joan H. S.

“I just wanted to thank you and your team at The Atwater for your work ethic and the time you put into my project. I am hopeful that I will see your team on my next project.”
Ken Kowalski, Hoffman Construction

“Early on in the process we had visited your showroom and were assisted by Alicia Davis. Alicia worked with us, diligently, utilizing her incredible expertise, until we found a carpet and a pad that was just what we needed and wanted. She was the reason we returned to Floor Factors! Your estimator came to our home and provided expert measurement, answered all my questions and provided suggestions – all with the same professionalism that Alicia had provided. Our experience with your company was stellar! The dedication to serving your customers with respect, care and in a timely manner allowed this experience, which had not had a great start, to become a most favorable one.”
Marie B. Kurtright

“I don’t know where to begin or find the words to express our gratitude. We can’t thank you enough. Especially Ray, he seemed to understand what we needed without much input. Everyone worked so hard with a smile on every face. I certainly learned a lesson. Our little house is a happier place to be.”
The Naida Ramey family

“We recently bought a town home in Portland and needed a dining room rug. I emailed several Portland companies with what we had in mind. By far, the most complete and helpful response came from your salesman, Rick Morehouse. When we were in Portland we visited your store and met with him. He was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. We got just what we wanted and benefited greatly from his suggestions and recommendations. I wanted you to know what a fine representative he is for your company. We’ll be back when we have further needs.”
