What Vacuum is Best for Your Carpet?
Our Portland carpet experts invite you to learn more about a variety of carpets and cleaning best practices. Remember, not all vacuums (or carpets!) are created equal.
Shag carpets have loose, long and less dense fibers. Because of these long, loose fibers they can hide a lot of dust and dirt. When selecting a vacuum cleaner it is important that it has a powerful HEPA filter. It’s also imperative to have a vacuum with large wheels to maneuver around the long fibers of the rug. Swivel heads don’t necessarily work well. For this reason a tough and sturdy vacuum is also recommended.
Berber Carpets are best known for their loop pile construction. Because of these loops dirt and debris sit on top of the carpet instead of sinking into the carpet. This leads to frequent cleanings. It is very important to pick a vacuum cleaner that will have significant suction power. Berber carpets are also susceptible to loops getting pulled and snapped. Finding a vacuum that allows you to control the spinning brush will aid in avoiding snagging and unraveling your Berber carpet.
A frieze carpet is a tightly twisted carpet with Fiber lengths between a plush and a shag carpet. The Tightly twisted fibers add to its durability. To avoid shredding your frieze carpet the proper vacuum cleaner would have a rotating brush that can be turned on and off.
Plush carpeting is identified by its smooth, dense cut pile fibers. These carpets require a vacuum cleaner with a lot of maneuverability. The perfect vacuum would be lightweight with large wheels. It is also crucial to have a vacuum with adjustable brush height settings. The settings should be set so the vacuum can easily glide the top of the carpet.
Soft carpets require gentler cleaning action to avoid unnecessary wear to the carpet. Many vacuums have overly aggressive action, this could damage the carpet. There are 5 characteristics of a vacuum cleaner that would be appropriate to use with a soft carpet. These attributes include an adjustable height brush roll, light weight, large wheel size; adjustable motor speed and optional brush roll control.
Carpet Fibers & Materials Explained
From synthetic to seagrass, carpet fibers run the spectrum. Proper carpet maintenance means not only knowing your carpet type, but its material as well. Learn more about how to keep your carpet looking its best and lasting longer.
Synthetic carpets consist of Nylons, Polyesters and Olefins. Synthetic fibers are extremely durable so you can use a vacuum with aggressive cleaning power without worrying. Beyond that depending on the type of carpeting would determine the best vacuum for your home.
The most popular Natural Fiber is Wool carpeting. Wool carpeting is very durable and long lasting but it must be vacuumed with care. If a revolving brush is to be used on wool the bristles must be flexible and forgiving. This will ensure the fibers will not fuzz the yarns and prematurely wear the carpet.
Other materials used in carpeting are sisal, sea grass, mountain grass, bamboo, coir, cotton, jute, viscose, tinsel, silk and leather. These types of fibers usually require specialty brushes that are very soft to not damage the fiber. Make sure your vacuum cleaner has a specialty brush made specifically for your type of fiber.
For all Carpets! Remember to have your carpets professionally cleaned regularly. Recommended time between cleanings is 12-18 months.
“The carpet looks lovely and I am very satisfied with the service. I do especially want to express my appreciation to Jeff Dyrland for the excellent job he did in my home. He was superb in his skill and conscientiousness. It was amazing to watch him handle the huge, heavy carpet all by himself. It was truly an impressive experience. He also maintained a cheerful, friendly attitude throughout the long, arduous day! Thank you also for your efficient measuring of the carpet!”
“What a relief to have a friend of the firm to help with an issue about which I know nothing whatsoever. Thank you for taking the time to personally handle our order and setting us up with an installer in Bend. Your help is much appreciated!” Lara Stahancyk, Kent, Johnson & Hook P.C.
“I wanted to thank you and your guys for the job you did replacing my parents’ carpet. According to my dad, it went off like clockwork, my parents really like the carpet and my dad said your guys did a great job and he enjoyed working with them. Thanks a bunch for the great service. I owe you one. ”
“Thank you for the great service at every point of this relatively small project. We will recommend your services.”
“We would like to thank you for the personal attention and courtesy extended to us. You allowed us the latitude to make those time consuming decisions that are always needed in selecting carpets for a home. We are extremely pleased with the end results. We would be remiss if we did not mention the skills of the carpet installer, Jeff Dyrland. He is a conscientious craftsman who completed the job in an extremely skillful and professional manner. If he is representative of the employees you hire, you certainly are doing it right.”
Bill and Jill L.
“We finally have the bedroom and bathroom finished and here are some pictures of the finished product. Thanks for all your patience and help with our project. I’ve been referring lots of people to you!”

“We are now settled or almost settled, into our new home here in Washington. We often get to Portland on weekend trips and that’s how we found your business and your helpful staff. We had heard about the Amtico products and you had that line of flooring with samples to view. We ended up with the slate look in the mudroom and hallway, a cherry wood floor in the TV room and a tile look in a guest bath. We’re very pleased with all of them. Thanks for all the help from your end.”
Lenore and Don L.
“Just a note to tell you I’m pleased beyond description with the work your guy did for me. He was fast, competent and left not a thing to show repair work had been done. I will recommend Floor Factors with delight.”
“I am still moving back into the studio and it’s much nicer on my body than moving out was. It looks beautiful and feels so good, especially compared to the concrete. Please also include the exact name of the product. I already have one person I want to refer it to. Thanks. It’s been a pleasure working with you guys.”
“I just wanted to let you know I was by to say hi a couple of days ago. You were not available so I talked to Rick Morehouse because I am getting a lot questions about the newest engineered hardwood flooring from my clients. Anyway, Rick was very knowledgeable and professional so I wanted to let you know how refreshing it is to have a resource like Rick instead of going to the big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes. I will not hesitate to send business to Floor Factors anytime.”
“Thank you so much for all your help, your enthusiasm and attention to all my questions. Please extend my thanks to your installers. They did and outstanding job! They were on time, professional and helpful – they exceeded my expectations. This was not the easiest job in the world due to the small space and the carpet pattern. The installers had to move all the heavy furniture. Your installer’s experience and expertise were so valuable in making everything come together. You are all outstanding representatives of your company.”
Joan H. S.
“I just wanted to thank you and your team at The Atwater for your work ethic and the time you put into my project. I am hopeful that I will see your team on my next project.”
Ken Kowalski, Hoffman Construction
“Early on in the process we had visited your showroom and were assisted by Alicia Davis. Alicia worked with us, diligently, utilizing her incredible expertise, until we found a carpet and a pad that was just what we needed and wanted. She was the reason we returned to Floor Factors! Your estimator came to our home and provided expert measurement, answered all my questions and provided suggestions – all with the same professionalism that Alicia had provided. Our experience with your company was stellar! The dedication to serving your customers with respect, care and in a timely manner allowed this experience, which had not had a great start, to become a most favorable one.”
Marie B. Kurtright
“I don’t know where to begin or find the words to express our gratitude. We can’t thank you enough. Especially Ray, he seemed to understand what we needed without much input. Everyone worked so hard with a smile on every face. I certainly learned a lesson. Our little house is a happier place to be.”
The Naida Ramey family
“We recently bought a town home in Portland and needed a dining room rug. I emailed several Portland companies with what we had in mind. By far, the most complete and helpful response came from your salesman, Rick Morehouse. When we were in Portland we visited your store and met with him. He was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. We got just what we wanted and benefited greatly from his suggestions and recommendations. I wanted you to know what a fine representative he is for your company. We’ll be back when we have further needs.”
