Q: Can I install flooring over my old vinyl?
A: It depends on the type of flooring you are installing, but generally, if you only have one layer of vinyl and it is in good shape you can install your new floor over your existing vinyl. If you have two layers of vinyl you have three options: remove the existing two layers of vinyl and survey the condition of the sub floor, install new sub floor if the existing sub floor is deficient, or add ¼” plywood to the existing vinyl. The third option has a disadvantage in that it will raise the height of your floor and you many need to replace your trim and thresholds.
